Tinker Northcote

The jewel of Melbourne’s north side, Tinker Northcote sits as an unassuming touch of modern class to the rustic, suburban sprawl of Northcote. Tinker stands out from its surroundings by creating a sleek, refreshing venue to draw in the inhabitants of the neighbourhood. We sat down with Adam Vocale to gain more insight.

When did Tinker Northcote open?

We opened December 1st in 2016.

What made you choose Northcote as the location for your next café?

Northcote is still considered part of the inner city but it typically has the perception of being a little bit grungy. There are definitely a couple good cafes here now, but when we opened there was almost a gap in the market for quality cafes in the area. We also found a lot of a lot of young couples were getting priced out of the market in Fitzroy and those sorts of suburbs and coming out here. It was a good place to open as we didn’t feel like there was too much competition within the immediate surroundings.

How would you describe the design of Tinker Northcote?

Our fit out is very clean and sleek as a point of difference to a lot of other cafes associated with this area. It was important for us to bring a touch of that over this side of town. I think it’s been received quite well.

Where does the name Tinker come from?

The second meaning of Tinker actually means “mischievous child”. Julian, Ben and I all went to school together. Those two were always in trouble at school so Christy Lee thought of the name and that’s where it came from!

What separates you guys from other cafes in Melbourne?

Other than the obvious, being our menu! Coffee is something we hold in really high regard, we use Inglewood coffee. But to be honest, most importantly it’s the vibe. I feel people come here more for the experience. Melbourne cafes are really the new nightclub if you know what I mean. The breakfast/lunch culture is becoming massive. People want to travel and come just for the experience; the food, the people, playlist and music we put together.

The guys in here love what they do.

What is your favourite meal on the menu?

Chilli Scrambled eggs.
